Cognition Corporation announces Cockpit Version 6.0.1
Cognition Corporation (Bedford, MA) announced today the release of a maintenance update for version 6.0 of the Cockpit.
Some of the significant changes since version 6.0 include:
- The drop list used in many places in the Cockpit has been replaced with a much more standard and easy to use drop list.
- Custom XML import capability is now available.
- Images pasted from the clipboard are now stored in a PNG format, which is much more compact and should
allow Word exports to perform better.
- Clicking on another item in the Cockpit while rendering a Cockpit document or portion of a Cockpit document
now aborts the render operation on the server. This should eliminate the performance problem users could
cause by clicking multiple times on very large documents.
- A new scoring option “Failure frequency” has been added to the FMEA table options.
- A new section format “AdHoc Charts” has been added that allows the use of various graphical charting methods
to render Cockpit data.
In addition, there are a significant number of fixes and other improvements. For complete details, see the Support Wiki.

Cognition Corporation announces Cockpit Version 6.0
Cognition Corporation (Bedford, MA) announced today the release of Cockpit version 6.0. This major release includes
the following significant new functionality:
- Bi-directional Visio Link – In version 6.0 there is a new Native Visio document type. This document allows you to
incorporate a Visio diagram that links elements of the diagram directly to Cockpit objects and data attributes on
those objects.
- Sequential Group Relationships – Prior to version 6.0, groups could only be hierarchical (parent and child
relationships). In order to better represent a process flow, groups can now have both hierarchical and sequential
relationships. This means a single group has four relationship types: Parent, Child, Successor, and Predecessor.
These relationships are particularly important when connecting groups to Visio diagrams.
- Group Types – Groups now support types similar to requirements. These types can also be configured to have
hierarchical or sequential type relationships. Some of the important capabilities that are made available
by group types include:
- Ability to link to specific Visio shapes based on group type
- Control of the group icon displayed
- Custom user interface control such as filters and home page customization based on the type
- Mapping into a company’s specific terminology for hierarchical and sequential data using group type
names that match the company terminology
- Inter-project Linking – With version 6.0 you can now link requirements, groups, and documents between
projects. This allows you to divide large projects into more manageable sub-projects. Each project can have
its own access control and version management. The items can then be linked into other projects and any
changes in the source project will be reflected in the destination.
- Default From Data Sections – In order to make it quick to perform design trade studies, new parameter
data sections can now inherit their values from another existing data section. You may have a design
that has thousands of parameters but only a small number of them will change for a new design alternative.
Using the new “Default From” option on a data section, you can quickly derive all the parameters for the
new alternative and only the parameters that are different need to be specified.
- Custom Data Requests – Custom data requests are a feature available in the Site customization area of the
Cockpit. This new feature allows a wide range of both database queries and modifications to be created
when configuring the Cockpit at your site.
- Other Improvements – There are many other changes that are part of the Cockpit 6.0 release. These changes
are a mixture of bug fixes and enhancements to the product. Each of these is tracked using a Software
Performance Report (SPR). To see a summary of all the items fixed in this version, please visit our support wiki.

Cognition Corporation announces Enterprise Cost Management™ Version 6.1
Version 6.1 improved ECM’s web based interface making ECM more available to infrequent users without the need for
extensive training. Web access into the ECM database utilizes the same general framework as the Cognition Cockpit®
software employs, including login, table of contents, history retention, and table display. ECM Version 6.1 also
includes improved access to Scenario reports, additional commands, such as Create Scenario, Estimate Cost, and Add
Element, and expanded Projects able to hold any data object, so that each user can have his or her own Project
containing the Scenarios, Elements, Estimates, Initiatives, etc. that they are tracking.
This enhanced thin client access is part of ECM Version 6.1, which will be released in Q4/2009. There is also a new
report outputting a Monte Carlo simulation of Total Cost, performance improvements, and improvements in calculating
support costs.

Cognition Corporation announces Cockpit Version 5.3
Cognition Corporation (Bedford, MA) announced today the release of Cockpit version 5.3. The new version strengthens
Cockpit’s capability for managing the entire Product Development Process by adding key features to its support
for Active Requirements Management. The new version enhances the collaborative Web2.0 environment by providing
up-to-date visibility to project data when multiple users are working within a project concurrently. The web
experience is further enhanced by improvements to user defined attributes for project data, such as voices and
requirements, as they now additionally support graphics, tables, and other rich content.
Cognition also added a document template library that allows creation of new documents from templates, making it even
easier for the occasional user to add content. The accuracy of the active sessions report has been improved and it now
displays users’ full names and phone numbers to further facilitate collaboration. The new side-by-side lists
feature provides direct visual correlation between related items, such as Voices and Requirements, Requirements and
Risks, Failures and Causes, etc.

Cognition Corporation announces Enterprise Cost Management Version 6.0
ECM Version 6.0 incorporates a variety of new features to ease the task of customizing applications for users and
supporting multiple estimates per line item. The added customization capabilities means user specific features can
easily be added without the need for database migrations. The modifications also make it easier for users to add
their own functions using Cognitions ASE scripting language. The new features include:
- Customization Attributes - All ECM specific objects, including such data types as Cost Contributors, Estimates,
Initiatives, Elements, and Scenarios have been given string keyed maps for custom data. These maps will allow
for future database changes without requiring data migration. Four map attributes have been added, including
maps for Reals, Strings, Dates, and Objects.
- User Definable Table View - Users can now define multiple table view formats that can be stored and retrieved.
Any custom table view formats are available to all users.
- Custom Data Support - Users can now import and report custom data without requiring an updated ECM domain. An
import custom data command has been added as well as a Scenario Output Custom Data report.
- Dual Source Support - Users can now specify more than one Estimate for each Scenario line item and a ratio (70,30)
to determine the weight each Estimate should be given in calculating the cost for the line item.
- Multiple Target Support - Users can now specify more than one Target cost for a Scenario. Most reports allow the
user to specify which target cost should be used for the report. Some reports allow multiple targets to be reported.
- Estimate and Scenario Costs Stored For Performance - Estimate cost levels and NRE/Lot Quantity pricing rates are
now stored on the Estimate for improved performance. Scenario PCL, BCL, TCL, and TPL costs are also stored for
improved performance on reports.
