Senior Application Software Engineer

Company Description:

Cognition is a small, fast moving company that provides a flexible, diverse, and exciting work environment. We provide a suite of software tools to capture and model many aspects of product design and that provides enterprise wide design collaboration. We also provide consulting services and training in the deployment and use of these solutions.

Overall Job Responsibilities:

The Application Software Engineer will work with the Cognition team to design, develop, and test a variety of Cognition software applications. Development of these applications uses object oriented programming techniques in various scripting languages, HTML, XML, and other technologies. A candidate for this position is expected to understand and be able to quickly learn new skills in all of these areas.

In addition to the development responsibilities, the Software Engineer may perform various technical and support tasks. These may include occasional customer support, internal IT support, computer setup, and maintaining internal company documentation and support systems. This person may also assist with testing and documenting new product releases. The development and other activities will require the Software Engineer to coordinate and communicate with other team members, departments, and customers.

The person who fulfills this position is expected to:

  • Be part of a team that designs, develops, and maintains Cognition’s various software applications
  • Participate in design sessions for new product features and capabilities
  • Work with Cognition’s customers and support personnel to debug the applications and provide resolutions
  • Utilize electronic systems to ensure that all enquiries and customer contacts are logged as they occur
  • Proactively provide written technical problem/solution documents for customer and internal technical solutions
  • Participate in testing of software releases and provide feedback
  • Attend conferences to provide support to sales, marketing, and our customer base
  • Be flexible and adaptable to meet the often changing needs of a small and growing company.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or computer science
  • JavaScript and HTML experience
  • Experience with some object oriented language (Java, C++, etc.)
  • 3-5 years commercial experience (as intern or post-graduation)
  • Detail oriented nature
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Desired Experience:

  • Experience with Visual Basic, Java, XML, COM
  • Experience with Systems or Design Engineering methodology
  • Experience with Requirements Management or Product Development software applications.
